Earth Day 2023: Invest in Our Planet

How are you celebrating Earth Day this weekend? Every year on April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

With the recent news of Biden ending the COVID emergency declaration, we’ve been thinking about the end of COVID and how our planet has changed over the last three years. During this time, many more people became aware and started fighting the climate crisis. Also, because of COVID, there were fewer cars on the road and planes in the sky, not to mention less food and trash in the streets from people staying inside. During the pandemic, there was actually a drop in greenhouse gasses. So was the global pandemic good for the planet, and did it give Mother Earth a much-needed break? Maybe, but many have been on the road back to normalcy for about the past year as businesses loosened their restrictions and travel between countries opened back up. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue the fight for our planet.

EARTHDAY.ORG (EDO), the global organizer of Earth Day, has proclaimed this year’s theme as “Invest in Our Planet.” The theme encourages governments, businesses, and individuals to take collective action. Local officials can lead the charge by banning disposable plastics or restoring ecosystems. Businesses have the power to choose sustainable resources and business practices when creating their products. But as individuals, we can also greatly impact the environment. Just think about the little things you can add to your everyday routine, like recycling, composting, or donating.

Today, Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national, and local policy changes. Join the movement by finding an Earth Day event near you.
