Getting Ready for a New School Year

As summer comes to an end, the back-to-school season begins, bringing with it a mix of excitement and anticipation. But the best part of back to school means back-to-school shopping! Back-to-school shopping is a favorite pastime for many, new backpacks, fresh pencils and notebooks, and new first-day-of-school outfits to show off. But we recognize that even though it’s a fun time for the kids, it can be stressful for many parents considering the huge jump in prices of just basic goods. However, this annual ritual doesn’t have to break the bank. With some savvy planning and smart strategies, you can navigate the back-to-school shopping season while keeping your budget intact!

  1. Make a List and Set Your Budget
Before hitting the stores, set a realistic budget for back-to-school expenses. Don’t forget not only the school supplies but clothing, electronics, and food as well. Having a set budget will help you stay focused and avoid impulse shopping.

  2. Take Stock of What You Already Have
Look through last year’s school supplies and clothing to see if any can be reused. Or perhaps even friends and family members may have supplies they don’t need.
  3. Price Shop
Take the time to compare prices at different stores and online. Online retailers can often have better deals compared to brick-and-mortar stores. Also, take advantage of tax-free time (ends August 6 in Florida). Check out this list from USA Today on a ton of back-to-school deals.
  4. Take Advantage of Student Discounts
If you’re a college student, make sure to use your student discounts! Many retailers offer discounts to students, so just ask and have your student ID ready when making purchases. UNiDAYS is a great online resource for college students to find deals.
  5. Buy in Bulk
For items that you know will be used throughout the school year, consider buying in bulk at places like Costco or Amazon. Purchasing in larger quantities often reduces per-unit costs, saving you money in the long run.
  6. Get Creative with Lunches
Packing lunches for school can save money compared to buying meals at the cafeteria. Get creative with nutritious and budget-friendly lunch ideas. Prepare meals in advance and use reusable containers to minimize waste.

Back-to-school shopping doesn’t have to be a stressful experience for your wallet. Make an adventure of it with your kids and hop around to different stores to find the best deals. A little planning and resourcefulness can go a long way in achieving back-to-school savings!
